Over the last 25 years it’s been great to see the evolution of playgrounds for children with disabilities. There was a time when equal access simply meant we added ramps to playgrounds! This was the era when soft-fall material was nearly always an organic product like mulch and consequently non-trafficable for many children with limitations. As the availability of wet-pour rubber surfaces increased it has opened up many opportunities to improve equal access play. There are still some situations where ramp access is needed but playgrounds for equal access can be so much better when designed to take advantage of trafficable ground cover.
